一、afford的基本用法：

afford 是英语高考常考疑难词汇。其基本含义有“负担的起（……百思特网费用、损失、后果等）；抽出（时间）；提供 ”。常与can, could , be able to 等情态动词连用于疑问句和否定句中。用于否定句时，意思是“经不起（发生某事或做某事）”，含尽力避免发生或避免做之意。如：We couldn’t afford a television in those days. 那时，我们买不起电视。There’s a lot to do, we can’t afford to waste any time. 有许多事要办百思特网，我们一点时间都不能浪费。They did not consider whether they could afford the time or not. 他们没有考虑是否抽得出时间。We can't afford to pay such a price. 我们付不起这个价钱。Dancing affords us pleasure. 跳舞给我们带来快乐。 afford的形容词是affordable(支付得起的);第三人称单数是affords;过去式, 过去分词是afforded；现在分词是affording。
